film poster success

Four of the most successful Movie Posters

For the Last Exorcist Film Poster Bill Golds Brief was very clear in the way he wasn't going to show the posest girl on the front cover. This is as it is based on a true story and there were no religious connotations at all in this design.  The best visual element of this poster is that the images are silhouettes relating to the theme of the movie. There could have been many ways to present this poster, through doors opening, and something by the side of the bed while the girl lies in it, however its successful as it doesn't give to much away for the audience who want to watch the movie. The poster shows really good composition and it shows subtle semiotic clues about the Exorcist. The image shows the contrast between light and dark which portrays a particular mood, the back and white also shows the battle between good and bad in the film.

Jeremy Ville poster designer has come up with many examples of posters for this movie, he is well known for his compositions in this work. The poster shows the films main character Alex DeLarge in the center and is dotted with eyes, hinting at the extreme therapy the character will endure the film.  The poster is very eye catching as the 'A' is incorporated into the design with the use of the colours back, white and orange against the white background. The bespoke font with drop shadow has the most impact on making this movie poster successful.

The best thing about this film poster is that its different and eye catching, the image shows a shark and a human at the top, the message is obvious with what its trying to communicate to its audience and that grabs the attention. He made the poster fit to the genre of the movie with the recognizable image of the great white shark rising from the depths to snack on a someone bathing. One problem there was whilst creating this poster was that the shark didn't look scary enough. As many designs were experimented the shark looked more like a friendly dolphin. However improving this the designer added teeth to the shark making the image look more scary.  The scale size is another visual element that makes the poster successful as the shark is so large compared to the person swimming at the top. There is also no humor in the image as the situation that is being addressed is very serious.  The terrifying image made this movie poster a big hit.

In this movie poster a cartoon ghost is  caught in a red restricted circle as the main image. There is no title, no list of stars, no directors credits. The purpose of this poster was to tease the audience, that something was coming to save the world in the summer.  The film came out in 2009 only then was the designer revealed as Dan Ackroyd.  This poster was the most iconic poster (not the film), which made it successful , similar to Clockwork Orange.  The image on the poster was created into badges which had a big market as everyone wanted to be a 'Ghostbuster'.  The slogan for the movie and poster ' Who you gonna call' is still very memorable to this day.

The same company brand Three, that brought us the moonwalking Shetland pony. Both video ads shows Silly stuff. It matters. Three.co.uk  - Keep internetting. successful campaigns

These are successful advertising campaigns

The Whopper Sacrifice

Brand: Burger King / Creative Partner: Crispin Porter & Boguskyhis campaign
This campaign was launched in 2009 and was displayed on facebook, a social media, however facebook shut it down on the basis of user privacy violation. The campaign was most successful as the app notified friends when they were deleted, gaining more sponsors. They challenged the nature of the platform they were on and realised how social networks have changed the ideas of what friendship means.

True Blood: Revelation

Brand: HBO / Creative Partners: Campfire  And Company

This campaign was for HBO's first season of True Blood, the campaign was successful as the campaign was based on the theme mythology  There was a message sent to people who blogged about horror and goths which linked them to a website which was full of vampire only. The message was in a mysterious red liquid which grabbed everyone's attention. the website was called bloodcopy.com. The website  contains videos featuring real vampires debating whether they should reveal themselves to the human race. HBO started an outdoor poster campaign promoting a new beverage called trublood and featuring PSA's  supporting equal rights for vampires.
By creating a complex back story about a synthetic beverage that enabled vampires to “live among humans,” HBO and its creative partner, Camp-fire, were able to tap into an existing community of horror aficionados and organically build an audience that made True Blood one of HBO’s most anticipated and successful show débuts.

The REFRESH Project

Brand: Pepsi / Creative Partner: TBWA Worldwide

This is a social marketing campaign called ' The refresh project' branded by Pepsi, The project featured a pledge from Pepsi to hand out more than $20 million in grants to do good projects in six
categories and in what has since been coined “crowd-sourced philanthropy” (the audience voted on who got the grants). Sadly, the campaign was pulled after 10 months due to fraud allegations and slipping market share. The best thing about the campaign was that the brand committed more money to social media.

Let's Motor

Brand: Mini Cooper / Creative Partners: Crispin Porter + Bogusky

In Europe, the Mini Cooper had long been an icon. But in the USA the mini had only 2% brand awareness and even less market share. So what the marketers did was they decided to eschew traditional media in favour of playing up the fun-factor of the car itself - in shopping malls, on street corners, glued to billboard and other unlikely places where only a tiny vehicle with awesome gas mileage and a kind price tag could shine. Ten years later, Mini had not only far surpassed its goals of market share and sales. It is known as the brands biggest selling single market in the world.

Advertising

http://tomfishburne.com/?utm_source=alexvidal

programmatic Advertising

Programmatic technology is fundamentally changing advertising. Programmatic is an auction-based system where ads are brought and served across the web to a specific target audience. Programmatic has spread indoor and outdoor advertisements. Programmatic is cost effect which is a huge benefit, the advantages of this kind of advertising as it has the ability to reach the the  right audience , at right time with the right message. Brand owners are hesitant with this kind of advertising because of the quality, but there has also been some complaints about the placement of the advertisements that don't fit in with the context of other advertisements.  I believe that the quote next to the image is true as to get customers intrigued advertisements need to be unusual and unexpected to get there attention.

Consumer Attention

While pitching an idea to an audience grabbing the attention in the first 5 minutes is so important, other wise you will lose the interest of your audience. Marketers are always looking for new ways to catch the attention of their audience. Searching into the new trends helps the communication because its already relating to what's out there. The hard part is getting the right information across in a short period of time but there are many ways to approach this for example using graphics/ charts and videos are a good way to get messages across clearly and effectively using colours.

“Your social network is owned by advertisers. Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold … We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate — but a place to connect, create and celebrate life. You are not a product.”

Social media is packed for of advertisers promoting their products. Social media is probably the best way to attract and get in contact with people as so many are connected to it. A Brand such as netflix has already got a place in the social media, however the disadvantage to brands being on there is the amount of competition, they have to shout louder to be noticed. This helps marketers how brands connect with their audiences.

New and improved Advertising

Most branded companied state that they have a new improved product, this is up to interpretation whether they create one or just change the label. New and improved is a new way of looking at more product ideas and new ways of developing them to make them look better. Packaging can be changed aswell to make the product look new or it could just be a way to cover up an inferior product offering. I think that marketers when they are told to new and improve a product they should think outside the box to make something different but unique that relates to their brand.

Marketing

The marketing mix

The 4ps of marketing

The concept of marketing began in 1964 containing the mixer of ingredients. These ingredients included product planning, pricing, branding distribution channels personal selling , advertising, promotion, packaging, display servicing , physical handling, fact finding and analysis. These were grouped together in the 4ps of marketing. These are for the use of a marketing manager so the can control internal and external constraints of the marketing environment. Their goal is to make a decision for the benefit of their target market in order to get the best response of their product.

Product Decisions

The term "product" refers to tangible, physical products as well as services. Here are some examples of the product decisions to be made:
  • Brand name
  • Functionality
  • Styling
  • Quality
  • Safety
  • Packaging
  • Repairs and Support
  • Warranty
  • Accessories and services

Price Decisions

Some examples of pricing decisions to be made include:
  • Pricing strategy (skim, penetration, etc.)
  • Suggested retail price
  • Volume discounts and wholesale pricing
  • Cash and early payment discounts
  • Seasonal pricing
  • Bundling
  • Price flexibility
  • Price discrimination

Distribution (Place) Decisions

Distribution is about getting the products to the customer. Some examples of distribution decisions include:
  • Distribution channels
  • Market coverage (inclusive, selective, or exclusive distribution)
  • Specific channel members
  • Inventory management
  • Warehousing
  • Distribution centers
  • Order processing
  • Transportation
  • Reverse logistics

Promotion decisions

In the context of the marketing mix, promotion represents the various aspects of the marketing communication, the communication of information about the product with the goal of generating a positive consumer response. Marketing communications decisions include:

  • promotional strategy
  • Advertising
  • personal selling and sale force
  • sales promotion
  • public relations, publicity
  • marketing communications budget.

These are 4 examples of companies that would use this marketing strategy.

Environmental Advertising

Environmental Awareness Advertising Campaigns

' Don't let this be our future'
save our environment stop global warming
This is a unique advertisement relating to environmental natural hazards such as flooding hurricanes etc. The message of it is tying to say that if we keep the environment clean we can help to stop global warming and other natural disasters.

'Before its too late'
This image is really effective and caught my attention as its the environment in the shape of  lungs. The message here is saying protect the environment helps to protect yourself and others. This image also relates to the problem smoking as smoking can damage your lungs and cutting down trees destroys the environment, so there are many illustrations in this image.

This image illustrates a contrast, between throwing rubbish into the ocean and damaging it or keeping it clean and alive.

All over the world the population is growing, causing more damage to the environment we live in. More pollution and more litter are some of the main causes to this. Global warming is slowly effecting us but there are ways to slowing it down. Environmental organisations have to get the point across loudly by these ads they have produced. Some of these advertisements above were designed to provoke feelings of guilt and to create change in how we choose to live our lives. The message in each of the adverts is reduce, reuse and recycle, but with a very unique and memorable twist.

Man finds dead mouse in McDonald's coffee

Ron Morais from Fredericton in eastern Canada was about to have his last sip of coffee from MacDonald's when he finds a dead mouse at the bottom of the cup.  CBC news reports that Morais 'sipped it contentedly all day' before taking the lid of before his last gulp. Mac-donalds in Canada have stated that they are further investigating the matter as this was a serious allegation. This led to product samples being analysed thoroughly.  Food safety and quality in food production at MacDonald's is a top priority to maintain high industrial standards. The worst problem with this is that customers will jump to conclusions about the hygiene in the kitchens and the work place, this can lead to health and safety issues of the workers and as a result the restaurant food chain could easily lose its business.

Floods  - http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/flooding-chaos-hit-britain-week-4638315

Flooding chaos to hit Britain this week with 2014 set to be wettest year since records began.

In 2014 Britain has had  the wettest torrential downpours over the past years. Drivers and motorist have been told to be wary of the conditions of the road and warned of localised flooding nationwide. The weather forecast has been grey and windy with shows and a lot of rainfall during rush hour. The Met Office warned we could face one of the wettest winters in more than 30 years. Research suggests that conditions are right for the north Atlantic to deliver a succession of powerful weather systems similar to those that brought last year's disastrous storms and floods.

Direct advertising

Direct Marketing is a form of advertising that promotes straight to the public either from  cell phone text messaging, email, interactive consumer websites, online display ads, database marketing, filters, catalogue distribution, promotional letters, targeted television commercials, response-generating, newspaper/magazine advertisements and outdoor advertising

Television marketing is an example of direct advertising where marketing strategies rely  making a direct audio connection with the consumer. The advantages of this is that it has contacts with a wide variety of people. They also display messages that can relate to the public such as home insurance or PPI compensation. They also display people from the public promoting the service to attract more customers which gives them a higher benefit in the market, as there are many competitors in the advertising business.  This is most likely to be targeting  people who have had accidents and need compensation or want to provide enough insurance to provide the safety for their family.

The most common direct advertising is direct mail such as post cards or magazines. These are so it gives the customer the opportunity to purchase directly. These advertisement's provides the benefits of purchasing the product from the customers where they can access and purchase on line or reply by postal mail. This is a successful way of directing advertising as the public are more likely to purchase the product by having a copy of it which makes it more personal instead of having a look online and looking at many reviews of the product which then makes the customers questions the advantages and disadvantages of the product. I would personally like to go and buy a product than buying it online as I would be the personal owner of it and there's a guarantee that its my purchase.

Email advertising is another example, it involves an act of offering to a potential buyer. As an example a restaurant chain such as pizza hut have certain offers on to win meal deals.Customers have the opportunity to accept these offers by giving details in such as name and email so if they have any other offers email is the fastest way to contact them. I believe this is a good way of advertisement if the customer wants it, otherwise unwanted emails get deleted so its not a guaranteed promotional service.  An advantage is that the majority of the public read there emails on a regular basis for work and remaining in contact with other people. These emails may also contain a web address so people can find out more information about a product or offer or have contact information to get in contact with the company.

Billboards are outdoor advertising , this is direct to the public as they drive or walk past. This is effective as people cant help but see them as they are big and high up. Some billboards are also eco and environmentally friendly.

Vernacular

The language of advertising

Advertising Guinness Drink

'The greatest ad of all time' . This advertisement includes surfers waiting for the perfect wave, relating to how punters have to wait for the Guinness drink to settle. The advert includes crashing waves  created by art technology that turns the waves into white horses racing the surfers back to shore.  The language in this image is very powerful and strong and aims to get more of an audience to purchase the drink. The power of the wave can illustrate the feeling you get when you taste the beer.  Its like an oxymoron in the English language where the horses are racing at a fast speed but Guinness takes more time to settle.  At the end of the ad , a quote came up saying ' good things come to those who wait'. So waiting for a wave can take ages but when you get a big one its worth waiting for.

This advertisement really stood out to me as its straight to the point which is good when you want to catch your target markets attention.  The use of the language is direct and in bold, but the billboard also adds humour ' we're on a billboard'. Its practically saying recognize me, the voice wants to be heard. With the writing being on a burgundy background it makes the white writing stand out. Billboards are commonly displayed outside where the majority of the public can notice it.

This is really effective advertisement for ketchup. Firstly it relates to the product by the poster being in red, this grabs the audiences attention. Secondly the image displayed is a ketchup bottle being cut up in a way you are supposed to chop tomatoes up, which makes it relatable to people who use or even eat tomatoes. The slogan at the bottom ' no one grows ketchup like Heinz' this is presented in a way the ketchup bottle is standing up not lying down.  The product is also in the middle of the advertisement illustrating that its the most important thing/ the main product for the audience to look at.

Advertising for diesel

http://www.creativeadawards.com/diesel-be-stupid-advertising-campaign/

Aftershave

Diesel set up an advertising campaign, the campaign was titled ' Don't be stupid'. The method they have used is effective as it relates to their target audience as people have heard in their life the sentence ' Don't be stupid', this then creates an emotion and a doubt that what they are doing is wrong.  The quote from the website includes ' crusher of possibility'.  Their advertisement explores new creative ideas that may be stupid, but they are displayed to explore the possibility of getting a wider audience for their brand. My opinion of this is that I think that it is an unusual of attracting an audience but this makes it unique and different, which will draw the public's eye.

Ilustrative Advertising

http://www.bhatnaturally.com/advertising/25-print-ads-with-great-illustration-styles/

Coca Cola illustrative Ad

For many people this ad (above) marks the time of the festive season. This Illustrative Ad is for the brand Coca Cola. The ad is very effective as it uses the bright red colours to attract its audience. 'Delicious and refreshing' adds  more emphasis on the product. Its stating that the drink doesn't only taste nice but its refreshing which can symbolize a fresh start a new taste on life, it makes people want to try this new product. Santa Claus is used as an christmas Icon,  this is to attract children, as children fantasise over father Christmas and how amazing he is at bringing gifts, it also brings families together. Christmas is the season which brings everyone together so already it shows it attracts a large audience. The ad also illustrates that the product is for everyone and is made for sharing. I think the quote means that even when your busy you can take a break just to have a refreshing drink.  In my opinion this ad works because Santa Claus is the main character as children learn about Santa from when they are young, he is a very popular Icon.

Protection against mosquito's  - BROS product repellent

This is a illustrative ad for Bros, a product repellent against mosquito's. This ad is very clear on how it illustrates the product, as the image uses mosquito' s as the main characters. The ad tells a story of a mosquito not happy with another mosquito watching the television, this is good as it relates to the audience who they are selling it to,their target market is adults as they can use it for themselves and their children. The quote ' Its what mosquito's would use on mosquito's they don't like'. relates to the story they are trying to demonstrate. This is a very simple ad that shows what its trying to promote straight away, with the product shown in the bottom right hand corner next to the quote. This I think is a very good way so the viewers don't get confused about the product they are trying to sell.

Macacolandia Design studios

This is an effective design that brings illustration to life.  I think it clearly illustrates the message and I think it relates to the quote ' Be careful what you wish for'.  It shows to the viewer that a chef can be dangerous if they have equipment in their hand and are being annoyed by a person that wants attention from them. Bringing the image to life can make it seem real and personal to the person who drew the image and it also brings to life for the people who is viewing it. This can also be seen as a warning not to get on the wrong side of a chef.

Smoking Kills

This illustration is a good way to show that smoking kills. Its effective as the first thing you see is the cigarette and the ash. But as you look closer the ash is made out of people who are holding on for their lives. This is a very artistic way of revealing there message simply by putting the product and the consumer together.  I think this image is very dramatic as it creates an emotional effect on the viewer. The cigarette is the main attraction as its in bold but the people stand out as you can see their arms reaching to hold on and crab something. Its also effective as there is more than one person this symbolizes that smoking can kill anyone who smokes, Shown by the people already in the ash tray. This can relate to real life situations because when people die they cant be re-awoken the same as you cant re-use  a cigarette once its burnt away.

Digital advertising trends

Retailer and Consumer relations?

As a part of the retailer and consumer relation, it is important to know your target audience.

Research into the target market is so crucial to the marketing industry as throughout history targeted advertising has changed. This recognition that advertisements are being improved and added to newer technology will increase chances of sales. The technology industry is aiming for a relation to please every aspect of the consumer, looking at newer ways of developing their products all the time therefore their products would have little competition.

Thanks to all this new and improved technology consumers feel that they have an option of going into stores and buying their products, but instead they are engaged with digital technology and buying their shopping on-line and having it delivered to their door. In my opinion this decreases the customer experience, as they are not getting out there personally and seeing what's out there. However there are many reasons why people do on - line shopping. 1. they may work long hours and may not have the time to go out as some stores may not be open at certain hours. 2. others may be disabled and may not be able to have access to supermarkets. 3. Its an easier and faster way to get shopping done by the click of a button + many more. That's why retailers are developing new ways to meet the requirements of their customers, hence they would be more enthusiastic about  going out and shopping.

Advertising needs to evolve into something the consumer wants to notice.

My opinion of the above statement is that I believe that advertising needs to evolve in some cases for example a brand like fairy ( washing product) to keep the customer interested in buying the product. However some advertising can get quite repetitive and therefore people may find it less interesting but the reason behind repetition is to make it memorable such as a song in the charts gets played frequently so its known to the public. I think that advertising needs to be evolved to keep up with the trends and styles of today's society, but I don't think they should take it to the extent of looking into the future, as the industry is always changing.

This is a website link on 41 reasons to shop on-line -

http://www.sheknows.com/shopping/articles/801374/reasons-to-shop-online

I think that from reading these reasons that number 10 is a good example

Big, awkward or heavy items are delivered right to your door.

This is because carrying big and heavy objects can probably cause injury to the customer if they are carrying it all the way home or they might have to leave their car boot open which can be a danger to other road users if something falls out.

On-line shopping would help to prevent this situation as it would be delivered to your door safely and effectively. The service will be prompt and in some cases cost effective.

The best thing about on line shopping that it is optional.

Advertising trends

Social Media in today's society

Social media has had a major impact on today's society. Social media has many disadvantages, for example, there used to be a time where people would interact with each other face to face. Now every ones sitting in the same room communicating with each other by phone or laptop. Some of the older generation may say that social media is taking away communication, for example people don't talk now a days they text. so instead of saying 'what are you up to' - translates to  -  'wuu2'. This has changed society in the simple ways of reading , writing and spelling and maths, the most important skills to know.

Social media is introduced to children at a really young age, so they will be used to working with laptops which has replaced pen and paper. They have no need to spell words correctly as spell check does it automatically. This is a good improvement technology wise, but it takes away the necessary skills which are needed for certain jobs. A computer is like a calculator it tells you the answer, which makes life easier but when a situation comes up people wouldn't know what to do. For example if a till has broken in a shop and cant calculate the change then people who work there and have lived through this society wont have been brought up with the necessary skills on how to solve that problem. The problem with social media at the moment, in my opinion is that it can be one of the biggest distraction of all, when you are concentrating on your work and a message appears saying that you must see and be apart of this. People will instantly check the message as they assume its important, people are attracted to ideas that they haven't come across before, an example of that is the new iPhone 6, as its is know for being able to bend.

There is also another issue where if people don't communicate face to face secrets are kept hidden but with new technology that isn't so. People are know finding ways to hack into websites, such as Facebook and twitter just to find out important details like where you live or even your bank details. this gives people the opportunity to cause trouble which is bad as it causes danger within our society. Knowing that you cant trust anybody any more is scary.

On the other hand social media has its advantages by developing new ways to solving life problems such as cancer and finding away to get people to donate to charities and to produce campaigns of awareness which connects to many people around the world and search for solutions that may help us in the future.Social media has brought new ways not only to communicate to each other but has also helped other communicators such as advertisers and businesses to develop and stretch their branch. Technology helps people who are disabled to do there groceries online to improve their every day life.

Brands

A brand is a simple name, a sign, a design that is to be recognized by the public. Brands are used to differentiate themselves from other brands, shops, markets etc.  It helps to make your business personal and more effective when it comes to consumers buying your products. For example it shows the difference between Facebook and twitter two different social media websites.  Brands are managed to create shareholder value to increase the amount of money over a period of time. A brand is designed to help recognize a company, for example Mac'donalds is a well known fast food chain globally, recognized by the big yellow letter 'M'. Effective branding can increase the number of sales which helps profit and brand popularity and also promotes products that are associated with that brand. Branding experience is where people engage with the branding ( the product being sold).

Products have certain characteristics that make it special, or unique for example Nike's promotional quote can say Start Unknown finish Unforgettable. This kind of quote helps to promote the trainers and helps to relate to the consumers. Now brands have to develop in order to maintain their status by keeping up to date with the marketing trends.  Logos which are used in branding is a good way to attract the public. Without one I think that a company may suffer. I also think that the best brands are the ones that tell stories for example Disney is a well known brand across the world by the creators success Walt Disney, the logo represents his signature. Brands are a massive part of digital media trends and have to keep up with today's society otherwise a company will suffer because it wont be recognised as being different.

Mobiles

'By the end of 2013, there will be more mobile devices on earth than people'

http://www.digitalbuzzblog.com/infographic-2013-mobile-growth-statistics/

Mobiles have the biggest sales group in digital media. Mobile phone connections are increasing more rapidly every year. There are not many people now who don't have access to a mobile phone.  Mobile phones stores are getting more competitive because the newer product's are so popular. This results in more phone products containing more apps such as internet access, games and better quality cameras.
Getting customers interested in buying a product because they are now bigger and better for example, The new Iphone 6 can bend -  or is that just a rumour? The mobile phone may make life easier but has decreased face to face interaction's. The mobile connections between people is easier, for example it is advisable that parents should provide their children with mobile phones for safety reasons. Phones now a days are now made to communicate back to the user for reassurance purposes.

As phones are used frequently they are also a distraction for example in learning situations. However schools are now developing a system where kids can now bring in their ipads to do their work in class. Whether that will work or not is a matter of opinion. Some people would argue that point and say that the old ways are the best.  In my opinion it is good if people are using them for educational purposes, but you could also look at it as a source of entertainment, so it is a good device to have.

I think  addictions to  devices can cause some problems in the future, ' Watching TV can give you square eyes'. This will happen due to these devices being used constantly without breaks.
